England’s planned register for short-term and holiday lets is expected to be fully operational by March 2027, according to an update following a parliamentary response. The announcement gives a target date; the registration details still need to be confirmed.

What has been confirmed for England

The clearest new detail is the timetable: the national system is expected to be fully operational by March 2027. Reporting by Propertymark and Property Industry Eye says the scheme will be mandatory and primarily online.

Details of how registration will work remain to be settled. These include the information that owners or operators will have to provide, how frequently registration will need to be renewed, who will administer the system and how it will interact with local processes. Owners should therefore treat March 2027 as a readiness date, not assume that every compliance detail is already known.

The announcement applies to England. It should not be presented as a UK-wide registration system. Scotland and Northern Ireland already have their own arrangements for short-term accommodation, while Wales is due to introduce a visitor accommodation register in October 2026.
